Summary
To address the problem of global warming, wide use of wood and implementation of active forest
management are some of the solutions. In civil engineering, utilization of wood has a long history.
Wood piles had been used as foundations for structures in Japan until around 1950. After the 1950's
the amount of cement and steel production dramatically increased, and thereafter, at least in civil
engineering, currently wood is not widely used. One of the reasons, according to the belief of the
engineering community, is the high possibility of wood decay. Reconsideration of wood utilization in
construction would therefore enable its wider use, offering a countermeasure against global warming.
For this reason, the authors have been investigating wood piles that have been in use for long time.
The investigation of this paper concerns wood from the Asuwa River, in Fukui prefecture, Japan. The
area along the river was flooded in 2004. After this disaster, the Asuwa River was dredged and many
wood piles that were used in the foundation of three old bridges were found. Samples from these
piles, which were embedded in the ground for many years, were delivered to a laboratory for
investigation. The history of these piles, the results of identification of wood species, and the
decay of wood are discussed in this paper.
